Goathland is a small village high on the North Yorkshire Moors. It has a population of around 450 and is lucky enough to still have a village Post Office, a village school, and several village pubs. Goathland is surrounded by open moorland, and farms. During late summer, the heather turns a vivid purple as far as the eye can see, and its honey-like smell fills the air.
A short walk from Mulgrave Cottage through the village will bring you to the North Yorkshire Railway Station of Goathland, which has been seen many times on Heartbeat, and also featured in the Harry Potter films. A trip back in time on one of the steam trains is perhaps the easiest way to view the surronding countryside without being too strenuous. For the more outdoor friendly people there are miles of walks, The 'Rail Trail' and 'Mine Walks are two of the most popular walks, but for the more adventurous there are waterfalls, Neolithic sites, Roman roads and many other sites of intrest to be discovered, and of course I have to mention the fantastic views that just seem to surround you no matter where you go.
York, Middlesbrough, Whitby and Pickering are all just a short drive away if shopping is your preferred method of relaxation, as well as many ancient villages offering their own attractions are within easy driving distance.
There are several waterfalls around Goathland, the most well known are the Mallyan Spout, Water Ark, and Thomason Foss. There are interesting walks in virtually every direction, all of which take you through stunning scenery. It's worth noting, that no matter how busy it gets around the shops in the the village, the walks, the waterfalls, and the moors, are still as quiet as they ever were, and after 5.30pm, 365 days of the year ... the whole village is quiet.
